A Pukekohe local is knitting together a dying art and her love of cinema.
After discovering a similar programme overseas, Janice Marcel approached Cinema 3 on Edinburgh Street and Crafts Cinema Pukekohe took shape. The initiative sees crafty people watch films while knitting and sharing their creations.
“There are so many people feeling isolated, overwhelmed and digitally drained by this
fast-paced world – everyone’s losing touch, with their creativity and each other,” she told the Times.
“I’m trying to build a community, to bring people together for a shared experience, one that’s a source of calm and confidence. It’s all about slowing down, meeting like-minded people and enjoying a wholesome night out doing what you love.”
While many knit, it isn’t the only skill practiced.
“From crochet and knitting to embroidery, scrapbooking, crosswords – anything portable that sits on your lap is fine. Bring your project, settle in and enjoy a film with the lights slightly low so you can keep crafting while you watch,” Marcel says.
“There’s also a friendly pre-movie meet-up so people can connect before heading into the theatre.”
The first Craft Cinema was held late last year. The next, scheduled for May 24, features a most fitting film, The Devil Wears Prada 2. Although it has sold out, there will be more to come.
“We would like to run Craft Cinema at least four times a year,” Marcel adds. “If there proves to be enough demand, we would like to make it more regular and, in future, even take the idea to other cinemas.”
