Locals took a little turn on the catwalk recently, strutting their stuff at the St Andrew’s Fashion Parade in Waiuku.
The show was timed to mark the fiftieth birthday of St Andrew’s op shop, its manager, Sharron Levestone confirms.
“It was a free community event to show our appreciation to the wonderful people
who have consistently supported us over the years. We entertained a packed
church, with seats overflowing into the lounge.
“There was an array of outfits, a talented master of ceremonies and a magnificent high tea to close. Words cannot express how thankful I am to all who participated to make it so successful.”
The show was followed by a special church service.
“Colin Hood led the worship with assistance from myself. Reverend Richard Gray shared a heartfelt reflection and past ministers of our parish were acknowledged at our morning tea. It was a marvellous occasion to catch up with good friends.”
Less than a week later, the team marked another major milestone.
“I also celebrated ten years as manager,” Levestone says. “It has been a challenging yet exciting ride. Thanks to all who have supported me. The shop is a tremendous outreach to the community and a real treasure to have in our town.”
It’s no secret how the op shop has managed to provide the community with such long service.
“We are fortunate to have an amazing team of volunteers, a mixture of church parishioners and community members. We are supported by the Waiuku community and from further afield as well,” Levestone explains.
“We are known for a tidy shop layout, friendly staff, affordable prices and quality customer service. As a result, we were voted the number one op shop in Auckland a few years ago.”
Receiving donations from throughout Franklin, the shop has been giving back steadily for the past five decades.
“It provides tremendous financial support to the church, but our shop also donates a percentage of profits back into the community for various projects,” adds Levestone.
Donate to three organisations each month – such as Ronald McDonald House, the Alzheimer’s Foundation and Burn Support. We also do larger donations ranging between $1000 and $10,000 for Waiuku-based groups, such as schools and sports clubs.”
While it’s too early to say whether or not this dedicated op shop team will be celebrating with another show to mark its centenary, it’s clear that good ideas never go out of fashion.
