New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters is welcoming the release and return of hostages to Israel after they were held by the Palestinian militant group Hamas for two years.
“The return of hostages today will come as a great relief to their families and the people of Israel,” Peters says.
“We must also remember the vast majority of the hostages who lost their lives in the two years since Hamas brutally took them captive.
“New Zealand commends the leadership shown by all parties and mediators who made the release of hostages and detainees possible.
“We urge the immediate influx of food, fuel and basic supplies into Gaza.
“There is momentum for peace and today’s events are a significant step towards ending this devastating conflict.”
