NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is urging Auckland motorists to plan ahead and expect delays during a 14-hour full closure of the Southern Motorway between Papakura and Drury this weekend.
State Highway 1 will be closed in both directions from 7.30pm Saturday, February 14, until 9.30am Sunday.
The closure is required to allow demolition of the Bremner Road Bridge over SH1 as part of the SH1 Papakura to Drury project.
The existing bridge is being replaced to accommodate additional motorway lanes. The new bridge is expected to take about three years to rebuild due to the staging of nearby construction works.
Detours in place
During the closure, traffic travelling between Papakura and Drury in both directions will be diverted via Beach Road and Great South Road.
Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and plan journeys in advance.
The Papakura to Drury project, part of the Government’s Roads of Regional Significance programme, is expected to be completed by August 2030.
Key elements include:
- Three motorway lanes in each direction between Papakura and Drury interchanges
- Relocation and lifting of the Drury Interchange to enable rail electrification and future rail lines
- Six new motorway bridges and the replacement of two local road bridges
- A new 4km shared walking and cycling path along the motorway
- Improved safety features, lighting and environmental upgrades
