The Tuwhera Trust is hosting the 235 Kai Halloween Special in Waiuku tomorrow, October 31.
The purpose is to reuse, recycle, and find food that would otherwise end up in landfills.
Amiria Puia-Taylor, one of the volunteers at the Tuwhera Trust, said they thought that with Halloween coming up, it would be a great way to get kids out and about.
“We know that with the cost-of-living trick or treating is quite hard, it’s challenging, so we’re very fortunate to be able to collaborate with the Franklin Local Board, the Waiuku Library, and the Franklin Community Hub’s Whanau at Auckland Council, who will give us the community hall.
“We basically pop up, and a whole bunch of our volunteer aunties (that’s what we call them), they find all the food that’s donated from our various partners. That’s New World, Kiwi Harvest, as well as other local growers.
“We then repurpose the kai (food) into healthy, nutritious, free food for families, and they get to sit in the space and connect with people, and because it’s Halloween, it gives the kids something to do.”
The name was inspired by the phone number of the Waiuku area. Puia-Taylor says that 235 is a tongue-in-cheek reference because the area is not usually recognised as a part of Auckland city.
The Tuwhera Trust translates into ‘open the door’ and was formed in 2017 by Glenys Taupo to help combat Methamphetamine abuse for whanau that had no support.
Since then, it’s evolved beyond just drug addiction and recovery and also focuses on prevention. It now includes a Rangatahi development programme and food support, because the trust realised that drug addiction stemmed from the rising cost of living and the struggle that came from that.
The 235 Kai Halloween Special will be held from 6pm to 8pm on Friday, October 31, at the Waiuku Community Space, 10 King Street, Waiuku.
It is a free event, and people are encouraged to dress up in their favourite Halloween costume as there will be spot prizes to be won on the night.
