New Zealand’s political leaders have used Halloween as an opportunity for a round of light-hearted online sparring.
The National Party kicked things off with a Halloween-themed post mocking Labour leader Chris Hipkins.
The image, shared on National’s verified Facebook page on Friday, showed Hipkins depicted as a mock Halloween costume, complete with “flip flops”, “three and a half-failed policy announcement”, and a “cloak of desperation.”
The post was captioned “Happy Halloween” with a string of emojis.
National’s Halloween post quickly attracted mixed reactions online, with supporters describing it as light-hearted humour and critics calling it petty or unprofessional.
“This won’t help in elections mate,” one commenter wrote.
“Lots of tricks, no treats,” another said.
Following National’s jab, the Labour Party responded with a series of photos suggesting costume ideas for Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
Captions over who made the cost of living worse included, pirate, cowboy. demon hunter, Louvre robber, cat and finally, Luxon simply dressed as himself.
ACT leader and Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour joined in the Halloween banter with a set of short video clips shared across social media. One featured him saying, “you wake up from nightmares. You can’t wake up from a Green government.”
