MotoFest delivered action on and off the track at Hampton Downs over March 7 and 8, with close racing, breakthrough performances and the first champion crowned in the 2026 Star Insure New Zealand Superbike Championship series.
In the premier Superbike class, BMW rider Luca Durning surged into a share of the championship lead after winning all three races across the weekend, including the inaugural Aaron Slight Trophy race. Durning now sits level on 184 points with fellow BMW rider Rogan Chandler heading into next weekend’s final round in Taupō, although Durning holds the advantage on countback. Suzuki rider Morgan McLaren-Wood also featured strongly in the battles at the front.
The 600 Supersport class produced another highlight, with Yamaha rider Haydn Fordyce claiming his first national championship race win after a tight contest with series leader Jake Lewis. Lewis still leads the standings on 212 points, ahead of Ashton Hughes and Fordyce.
Several riders celebrated personal milestones across the weekend. Billy MacRae secured his first national win in the 150 Supersport class, ending Hunter Charlett’s eight-race winning streak, although Charlett wrapped up the 300 Supersport championship after another dominant set of race victories. Yamaha rider Harriet Grace also marked International Women’s Day with her first two national championship podium finishes.
Off the track, the inaugural MotoFest Bike Show proved a major drawcard alongside the Legends Garage, Custom Bike Show and a range of road and off-road rides. The popular track ride attracted more than 400 riders over the two days, rounding out a busy weekend of motorsport at Hampton Downs.
