Waiuku Theatre Group is commemorating Anzac Day with a special performance. Titled A Soldier’s Story, their play is based on historical accounts by soldiers from the Waiuku area.
The play is on stage at Waiuku War Memorial Hall April 23 – May 3.
“This story brings history, heart and humanity to the stage powerfully and emotionally,” the local troupe’s Amber Turner confirms. “People will feel every emotion from a story that promises to resonate long after the curtain falls.
Written by Glenda and Liam Hagenson, Alan Thomson and Shane Hartly, the play is a First World War variety style show. It follows its characters from life before the war, through military training to the horrors of the trenches as well as the impact on family on the home front.
Special guests at the opening include veterans and representatives of Waiuku’s emergency services.
The play is presented in association with the Waiuku Lions Club. The club worked with the theatre to bring the production to life 11 years ago, Turner says.
“The Waiuku Lions played a pivotal role in the first production of A Soldier’s Story. When the idea came to put the show onto the stage again, it was only fitting that Lions would be a part of this journey and cater the dinner shows.”
The club and the theatre group are proud to help keep the ANZAC legend alive.
“We hope everyone comes away with a deeper understanding and respect for what our fellow Kiwis did to protect our country and what they went through,” Turner adds.
“We believe Anzac Day is an important time when we pause not to celebrate war but to remember it. We remember their courage, resilience and also the fact that most of those who served were civilians just like us.”
