The best pictures captured by east Auckland photographers over the past year are now showing for the public’s enjoyment.
At the opening of the Howick Photographic Society’s annual Photography Exhibition yesterday Sunday, its president Doug Mitchell said for the eighth time the society’s event is a show in the region-wide Auckland Festival of Photography.
“We’re very proud of our achievements within their grand festival.”
Howick Local Board members Adele White and Kai Zeng attended the event on May 31, with White having the honours of officially opening the society’s exhibition.

Mitchell acknowledged the efforts of people who have made the show possible at Ormiston Town Centre until June 20, including the venue.
“Arts Out East – Ashley Grogan and Briana Woolliams, you have been of tremendous assistance,” he said.
“Arts Out East is a Te Tuhi programme supported by the Howick Local Board. They not only secured this venue for us but also provided funding and advertising.
“We wish to acknowledge Ormiston Town Centre for their support in allowing us this venue and the security associated with it.

“We thank the Times for your support. Our members have a great opportunity to extend their skillsets through our agreement, something that’s on show here.
“To run an event of this nature requires a great deal of support and for this we’re proud to have sponsors onboard,” Mitchell said.
“Print Art have done all the printing and mounting, at a special price, and will carry out any additional prints and mounting as a result of sales through this exhibition. Thank you, John Botton and team.
“Howick Local Board – your support of the arts, and in particular Arts Out East has a ripple-on effect to groups such as ours.

“Auckland Council – your support of the local boards in this manner has far-reaching results that are not easily measurable.”
Mitchell says the images are an excellent representation of the works by the Howick Photographic Society.
“We have 67 prints from 25 members. This is truly a phenomenal team display.
“We want to thank, and congratulate, all our members for the high standards that you have attained. This exhibition wouldn’t exist without your efforts.

“Behind every event, there is an organising committee. There have been significant hours, meetings, kilometres travelled, streets walked and favours asked.
“The team have worked tirelessly, and we thank Shona Kebble, Sheryl Williams, John Clare and Margaret Jones.”
Mitchell says all the images are for sale, “at extremely low prices”, and viewers can also vote for their favourite Best in Show photograph. It’s on a shop space next to New World supermarket.
