Waikato District Council has opened applications for its Waste Minimisation Fund. The purpose of the fund is to inspire and support waste minimisation projects that involve the community and promote education while benefiting Waikato communities.
Local businesses, daycares, kindergartens, Kura Kaupapa Maaori, schools and adult educators, community-based groups or organisations, and Marae within the Waikato district can apply.
Funding can be used for a variety of initiatives, including educational programmes, events, research, data collection, feasibility studies, and social enterprises – all aimed at minimising waste and encouraging long-term behaviour change.
Groups can submit multiple applications if they have multiple project ideas.
With an annual budget of $80,000, the fund is contestable and distributed through one funding round per year. Applicants can apply under two categories: standard funding ($1000 – $5000), or special projects ($5000 – $10,000).
All applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis by an independent panel, ensuring that successful projects align with the council’s waste minimisation goals.
Applications opened on March 17 and must be submitted by April 18. This funding is made possible by the Ministry for the Environment.
