Police have a video showing a violent event in Manurewa involving the mistreatment of dogs.
A man has been since been charged with animal cruelty after the alleged mistreatment of dogs.
Counties Manukau Central Police area prevention manager, Inspector MinHo Lee, says a neighbour believed dogs were being mistreated and began recording.
“The footage is shocking and shows violent behaviour being directed towards a puppy and two other dogs,” says Lee.
“The neighbour attempted to stop the offender from causing further harm to the dogs, which has led the man to become aggressive.
“He allegedly swung a pole at the victim, hitting their hand and causing their phone to fall into a bucket of water.
“He then continued swinging the pole around while threatening the victim.”
A video was posted to social media. Police were called to a property where a dog and two puppies were located and their owner was arrested.
“In liaison with the SPCA, the dogs were removed from the man’s custody and checked over by a vet,” Lee says.
“The appalling treatment of these dogs is unacceptable and this violent behaviour won’t be tolerated by police.”
A 29-year-old man will appear in the Manukau District Court today, April 28, charged with animal cruelty, assault with a blunt instrument and threatening to kill.
