After 31 years of service to The Salvation Army, Major Gavin Baxter is lacing up his boots for one final act of service as an officer.
The Greymouth man is walking from Bluff to Cape Reinga to raise vital funds and awareness for The Salvation Army’s foodbanks.
Launched on January 1, the ‘Marching for Meals’ campaign sees Baxter travel more than 2000km over six months, visiting Salvation Army centres and shining a light on the growing issue of food insecurity across New Zealand.
“I’ve spent my life serving people in need, and this walk is a way to keep doing that in a different way,” he says.
“Our foodbanks are often running on empty after Christmas, and we need your help to refill the shelves and make sure no family goes hungry in 2026.”
Baxter isn’t walking alone, as his wife Bev is following along in a campervan, helping to resupply him with everything he needs and offering encouragement and motivation whenever she can.
His journey comes at a significant moment in his life. Recently recovering from surgery and preparing for retirement, he says this challenge is deeply personal.
“I wanted to finish my time as an officer by doing something that really matters,” Baxter says.
“Walking the length of the country is no small task, but hunger is an even bigger challenge for thousands of Kiwi families.
“If my steps can help put food on someone’s table, then every blister will be worth it.”
“Families still need help long after the decorations come down. This campaign is about making sure help is there.”
Every dollar raised will go directly to replenishing The Salvation Army’s foodbanks nationwide, providing meals and dignity to families facing hardship after the holiday season.
The Salvation Army thanks Real Meals for supporting Marching for Meals and keeping Baxter fuelled with nutritious trail meals as he heads north.
