A fleeing burglar’s attempt to outsmart police by changing his clothes has failed, with officers arresting him a short distance from the scene in Manurewa early this morning.
Counties Manukau Central Police were called just after 3am to a burglary in progress at a dental clinic in Manurewa.
Inspector Warrick Adkin said officers arrived quickly, arresting one man at the business while a second offender fled in a vehicle.
“He didn’t drive far and abandoned the vehicle nearby, behind a building,” Adkin said.
The man then tried to disguise himself.
“The man changed his clothes and walked away on foot,” Adkin said.
“Unfortunately for the man, police officers outwitted his attempt to evade and apprehended him near Maich Road.”
Police took the 36-year-old into custody soon after. Both he and the other 36-year-old arrested at the clinic have been charged with burglary and will appear in the Manukau District Court today.
Adkin said the operation showed the effectiveness of frontline policing, supported by good security systems.
“This morning’s arrest shows the capability of our frontline staff. It’s also a reminder that good CCTV and quick reporting greatly assists us in being able to stop offenders in their tracks.”
