Police have launched a critical incident investigation following a fatal crash in Waipā last night.
Acting Waikato District Commander Will Loughrin says Police observed a black BMW travelling at excessive speed on Arapuni Road shortly before the crash, at around 8.40pm.
“Police have turned around activating red and blue lights intending to stop the speeding vehicle,” Loughrin says.
“It appears the offending vehicle has collided with a second vehicle.”
The driver of the second vehicle died as a result of the crash. A passenger in that vehicle sustained serious injuries.
Two people in the offending vehicle were seriously injured, while another two passengers received minor injuries.
Loughrin says Police are offering support to the family of the deceased, as well as staff who were involved.
Police are now seeking witnesses and are asking anyone who may have seen the incident, or who has dashcam or CCTV footage of the events leading up to the crash, to come forward.

Information can be provided to Police via the 105 service, quoting event number P064790633.
Loughrin says several investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances of the crash.
“This includes notifying the Independent Police Conduct Authority, as is standard procedure,” he says.
