This month is Frocktober, and Mike Faulkner of Bakers Delight Pukekohe is holding a bake-off/sausage sizzle/raffle to raise awareness about ovarian cancer.
Frocktober was originally an idea that the Ovarian Cancer Foundation came up with, but when Faulkner’s mother was diagnosed with it, she wanted to do something to help raise awareness.
“This is not a very well-known cancer; there’s not a lot of support out there for it.
“Mum just wanted to get involved, so she made herself a Frocktober account, and I thought we could get behind it at the bakery.
“It’s turned into more than just a sausage sizzle now, it’s turned into a big event with a back sale, and bacon and egg rolls, with seven different raffles as well,” said Faulkner.
On the day, Faulkner and his helpers will be using the Bakers Delight carpark, and will have tables set up for the baking, sausage sizzles, and the raffles.
In addition to plenty of food, everyone is encouraged to dress up in frocks for a chance to win spot prizes on the day.
Monique Porter of Columbus Coffee Inside Mitre 10 Mega Pukekohe will be selling cake slices, and Tash Soar from Lilly Valley Cakes will be baking on the day.
Many of the raffle prizes have been donated from local businesses such as Bakers Delight New Zealand and Pukekohe, Stirling Sports, Liddell’s Pharmacy, Designer Flowers, Bazza’s Steak House, Mitre 10, David Mills Ltd, Columbus Coffee Inside Mitre 10 Mega Pukekohe, and the Counties Manukau Steelers.
“As a family, we didn’t really know much about ovarian cancer, until Mum was diagnosed with it, so we thought if we don’t know about it, then chances are a lot of other people don’t know about it either.
- Frocktober will be held on October 25 from 9am to 2pm in the Bakers Delight carpark on Stadium Drive, Pukekohe.
