Heavy rain and strong easterly winds are forecast to impact Franklin and Waikato as a tropical low approaches New Zealand from the north midweek.
MetService says a strong and humid easterly flow ahead of the system is expected to bring periods of heavy rain and the potential for near-severe gale conditions across the upper North Island on Wednesday.
Conditions are expected to ease on Thursday once the low crosses the country, however MetService warns that heavy rain warnings remain possible and people should stay up to date with the latest forecasts.
Heavy Rain Watch
A Heavy Rain Watch is in place for Waikato, including parts of Franklin, from 3pm Wednesday, January 21, to 6am Thursday, January 22.
Periods of heavy rain are expected, with rainfall amounts that may approach warning criteria. There is a moderate chance the watch will be upgraded to a Heavy Rain Warning.
Possible impacts include rapidly rising streams and rivers, surface flooding, slips, and hazardous driving conditions, particularly on rural roads.
Residents are advised to clear drains and gutters, avoid low-lying areas, and take extra care when travelling.
Strong Wind Watch
A Strong Wind Watch has also been issued for Franklin and Waikato from 8am Wednesday, January 21, through to 2am Thursday, January 22.
Easterly winds may approach severe gale strength in exposed places, with a moderate chance the watch will be upgraded to a warning.
Gusty conditions may impact high-sided vehicles, exposed coastal areas, and infrastructure such as power lines and trees.
MetService says a further update is expected by 10am Wednesday, January 21.
