MetService is forecasting wet weather for Franklin and North Waikato tomorrow with rain and possible thunderstorms predicted.
In the 10 hours from 12pm – 10pm Friday February 13, Auckland, Waikato and Waitomo are set for periods of heavy rain or showers with a chance of thunderstorms and localised downpours of 25 to 40 mm per hour.
The heavy rain watch is in place not only for Franklin but most of the North Island tomorrow.
“Rainfall accumulations may exceed warning criteria in a few locations. There is a moderate chance of upgrading to a Warning,” the forecaster says.

“It’s a tricky type of situation where different parts of the region will see different amounts of rain. Broadly there’s a risk of downpours where 25-40mm of rain could fall in an hour,” MetService Meteorologist Lewis Ferris told the Franklin Times.
“Severe Thunderstorm Warnings may be issued so it’s worth signing up for push notifications,” he says.
Valentine’s Day weather on Saturday looks more settled but Ferris says “there may be a few lingering showers in the morning but looks to dry out by the afternoon.”
“It has been very warm and humid, with overnight temperatures remaining above 20°C. It’s this warm, humid air which is helping to drive the downpour potential tomorrow.
“Cooler air looks to move in overnight Saturday into Sunday.” Ferris says.
