A driver is in hospital with serious injuries after a high-speed crash in central Auckland early this morning.
Police said a vehicle travelling at speed down Victoria Street West lost control around 5.40am and collided with a stationary police car waiting at a red light.
Both vehicles were extensively damaged.
The police officer behind the wheel received minor injuries, while their passenger was unhurt. The officers had been heading back to base at the end of their shift.
Acting Auckland City District Commander Inspector Grant Tetzlaff said the vehicle was not being pursued by police, and said additional footage from before the crash was being released.
A video uploaded to the Auckland District Police page shows a red car, which police confirmed was the offending vehicle, travelling at high speed down Victoria Street, nearly taking out a pedestrian who was about to cross the road.
Police say support has been put in place for the police staff involved, while enquiries into the cause of the crash continue.
