Franklin locals will have the opportunity to try kayaking with whānau (family) in the Waiuku River and learn about some of the conservation work happening on the Āwhitu Peninsula.
The family-friendly kayak day will be held at Sandspit Reserve in Waiuku on March 22, hosted by the Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust with members of Auckland Sea Kayaks.
Anastasia Zaleta is the trust’s programme coordinator for Wai Connection & Whitebait Connection. She said the event provides a taster into kayaking as well as a chance to learn more about the local ecology and conservation efforts.
Kayakers can expect to spend 1.5 hours on the water with a 30-minute briefing beforehand. The event is designed for tamariki (children) and rangatahi (young people) aged 7 to 18, and their guardians. An adult must accompany all children aged 13 and under on the water.
There will be two sessions on Sunday, March 22. Group A runs from 12.30pm to 2pm, with group B from 2pm to 3.30pm.
Zaleta said the event was made possible through funding from the Ministry for the Environment and Foundation North.
Registration is essential via the Eventbrite website. Tickets are prioritised for locals first – readers of the Franklin Times can use the code LOCAL to unlock tickets. The remaining tickets will be opened to the public on Monday, March 16.
