The Kawakawa Bay and Orere Health Clinic Fishing Competition is back for more fishing fun.
The competition, which is held on March 28, is an annual event that varies between the first three months of the year, and has been held for the past 18 to 20 years.
Prizes such as fishing rods, vouchers, and clothing can be won on the day, along with plenty of spot prizes. There is also a $500 prize for an average-weight snapper.
Mel Cleave, the chairperson of the Management and Fundraising Committee for the Kawakawa Bay and Orere Health Clinic, said that although they do get some support, they still need to fundraise to keep the clinic operating.
“We do get some funding from Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand, as well as from Awanui Labtests (now known as Awanui Labs), which are required to run a professional clinic. So we have a funding gap of approximately $50,000 a year, and events like the fishing competition help contribute to filling that gap.”
The clinic also runs other events, like the Ultimate Classic Car and Bike Show, which was held at the Riverhaven Artland in February, and the upcoming Super Famers Plant Market, where the clinic will sell shrubs and seedlings during Labour Weekend in October.
The clinic also applies to professional funding organisations, and it has regular sponsors who help by donating prizes to various events.
Tickets can be bought in advance from various Kawakawa Bay retailers, such as Kawakawa Bay Motos, the Orere Point General Store, the Kawakawa Bay Dairy, the Tackle Box in Kawakawa Bay, the Top Catch in Clevedon, and at the clinic.
The competition will be held on Saturday, March 28, at Kawakawa Bay. It starts at 5.30am, with weigh-ins from 2.30pm, and a fish auction at 4pm.
Tickets cost $25 for adults and $10 for children. The clinic will also sell tickets at the boat ramp for anyone who has not bought any leading up to the competition.
