A major Police investigation has uncovered a New Zealand-based drug syndicate allegedly importing and distributing illicit substances nationwide through the dark web.
Operation Solana, led by the New Zealand Police National Organised Crime Group, has been underway for nine months and targeted the alleged importation and distribution of methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA and ketamine.
Sixteen search warrants were executed across Auckland and Hamilton over Thursday and Friday, February 19 and 20, resulting in 11 arrests.
Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Hunt said Police will allege the group used dark web marketplaces, encrypted messaging applications and cryptocurrency to conceal their identities and financial activity.
“We have established this group allegedly imported and distributed these controlled drugs across the country,” he said.

Authorities allege the drugs were shipped to New Zealand from the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.
Overseas partners including US law enforcement, the Australian Border Force and European agencies reportedly intercepted more than 200 kilograms of drugs destined for the syndicate.
Searches in New Zealand resulted in further seizures of methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA and ketamine, approximately $500,000 in cash, and three firearms, including a 3D-printed firearm.

Those arrested, aged between 24 and 42, are due to appear in the Auckland and Hamilton District Courts facing charges including drug importation and supply, unlawful possession of firearms and participating in an organised criminal group.
Hunt said the operation demonstrated Police capability to detect and disrupt online criminal activity.
“Offending on the dark web is not invisible,” he said.
“These arrests send a clear message: if you are importing or dealing drugs through the dark web, we will find you.”
