Terry Bollea, known to people worldwide as Hulk Hogan, died in Florida in the United States on Thursday, US time, according to a statement publicly released by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). He was 71 years old.
News media are reporting emergency services were called to Bollea’s Clearwater home following a report of a person in cardiac arrest.
He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away,” the company says.
“One of pop culture’s most recognisable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s.
“WWE extends its condolences to Hogan’s family, friends, and fans.”
Bollea was one of the sport’s biggest stars throughout the 1980s and 1990s, headlining events such as ‘Wrestlemania’ and ‘SummerSlam’ in matches against fellow wrestlers, including Andre the Giant and The Ultimate Warrior, among others.
He went on to an acting career in Hollywood, appearing in films such as Rocky III, No Holds Barred, Suburban Commando, and Mr. Nanny, as well as the reality television series Hogan Knows Best.
United States President Donald Trump has also paid tribute to Bollea on social media, saying: “We lost a great friend today, the ‘Hulkster.’ Hulk Hogan was MAGA all the way — Strong, tough, smart, but with the biggest heart.
“He gave an absolutely electric speech at the Republican National Convention, that was one of the highlights of the entire week.
“He entertained fans from all over the World, and the cultural impact he had was massive.
“To his wife, Sky, and family, we give our warmest best wishes and love. Hulk Hogan will be greatly missed!”
