Journalist, food writer and now a Franklin Club member, Helen Perry, invites locals to visit the club’s restaurant and try the family-friendly menu.
I was a regular diner at the Franklin Club long before becoming a member. On moving to Pukekohe 10 years ago, I knew the restaurant was open to the general public and it was an easy option when coming home late from work.
It wasn’t long before I joined the club and could take full advantage of activities offered. Dining soon became a regular Friday night event with friends.
However, when the restaurant went through a change of operators, there were a few lows among the highs. Until chef Ravi took over two years ago, that is.
Since then, the regular menu has been supplemented by a diverse range of specials. In fact, the latter has become, pretty much, standard fare and can hardly be called specials as very few are only one-offs.
In particular, the kitchen has nailed dishes such as the lamb shank with mash and veg – the meat just falls away from the bone.
Among my favourites are the seafood chowder, Guinness pot pie (a winter treat) the generous prawn cocktail and chicken and bacon fettuccine, although I am also partial to the smoked chicken salad.
On the other hand, my fellow diners have their own favourites, not the least being the packed burgers, the scallops and the fish and chips – the latter a large meal often requiring a doggy bag for that last piece of fish which just couldn’t be managed.
This is not the equivalent of an upmarket, city bistro but the relaxed atmosphere, light and bright environment, fast service and obliging staff all make the venue an enjoyable option Wednesday to Saturday nights.
What’s more, on the last Sunday evening of each month, Kathy’s three-course Sunday buffet with roast options attracts a good crowd, especially as patrons can choose from a selection of dishes. At just $38 per person (children under 12 years, $15), it is great value.
Prices are well within the range at lower priced restaurants – entrees under $20 and most mains from around $22.50 to $38, with a few exceptions. There is also a dessert menu.
Franklin Club’s restaurant offers good value for hearty meals and its suitability for families is a big plus – the kids’ menu provides five options priced from $13-$16. So, why not come and try?
