More than 82 riders took the country roads around Otaua for the annual Counties Cycle Classic last Sunday.
Races started at Otaua Hall on Maioro Road. They included three circuits: two laps for
beginners (30 kilometres), three laps for e-bike riders (45 kilometres), and a six-lap circuit for experienced riders (90 kilometres).

Port Waikato MP Andrew Bayly once again opened the Rotary Club of Pukekohe event.
For the men’s two-lap circuit, Brendon Clark came first, with a lap time of 1hr 2 min 29 sec, while Pat Callis came second in 1hr 13 min 21 sec, followed by Matt Grant with 1hr 14 min 17 sec.
Cameron Thomas won the men’s E-bike circuit with a time of 1hr 15 min 11 sec. Claude Radics came second in 1 hr 16 min 59 sec, with Rob Patience in third with 1 hr 24 min.
Samuel Hogman came first in the six-lap circuit, finishing in 2 hr 40 min 20 sec, while Andrew Westgarth placed second 2 hr 40 min 23 sec, and Juraj Krajcik finished third at 2 hr 41 min 7 sec.
In the female two-lap circuit, Birdie Roughan finished first with a time of 1 hr 14 min 17 sec, followed by Jenni Buksh 1 hr 32 min 42 sec and Sarrah Cop at 1 hr 39 min 3 sec.
Maxine Huggett won the female E-bike event with a time of 1 hr 30 min 9 sec with Sheta Wolfe finishing second 1 hr 41 min 56 sec, and Kerry Turnpenny third 1 hr 51 min 22 sec.
For the female six-lap circuit, Robin Marsh won in 3 hr 43 min 6 sec, Jenny Walden second at 3 hr 51 min 42 sec, and Susan Bonnawas third at 4 hr 21 sec.
Rotary Club of Pukekohe membership and public image director Mike Jaggs said that events like the Counties Cycle Classic were important to the club and community.
“For us, this is our major fundraiser, so our sponsors really help us with this, and for us, it’s
growing awareness of it again.
“We used to hold this out of the Pukekohe Racecourse many years ago, but the traffic
management plan made that impossible because of the cost.

“Without our sponsors, we couldn’t operate it because there are certain fixed costs, and traffic management planning is probably the biggest one of those.”
