After announcing plans to run for Mayor of Waikato District in early July, Fabio Rodrigues has removed his bid for the mayoralty in this year’s local body elections.
In a statement to the Franklin Times, the 19-year-old Pōkeno resident said that after “deep
reflection and due to personal reasons”, he has decided to step down from the mayoral race.
“This was not an easy choice. However, my commitment to our community remains as strong as ever, and I will continue my campaign for the Tuakau–Pōkeno ward council seat. This is my home.”
Rodrigues said the ward seat was where he believed he could make the most meaningful
difference right now.
“I look forward to the opportunity to represent and advocate for the people of Tuakau, Pōkeno, and the surrounding areas — ensuring that our voices are heard and our needs are met.”
As of July 28, incumbent Jacqui Church and former deputy mayor Aksel Bech are the only
nominees running for Waikato District Mayor.
