The Boondocks, the two-piece, high-energy riff rock band from the Āwhitu Peninsula, are back, this time with a video for their single Hell of A Time.
Like a lot of their songs, Hell of A Time started off as an introductory riff but soon turned into a full-fledged song. Unlike Don’t Let Them See You Cry, which dealt with some dark themes about growing up in the modern world, Hell of A Time is a departure from material and instead is light-hearted and fun.
This will be quite a noticeable contrast in styles and is due to the fact that Hell of A Time was not meant to be a part of the album and was intended to be a future project.
In the music video, for Hell of A Time, party goers can be seen dancing in their favourite costumes and having a great time, and even wrestling and finding love. It is definitely a departure from their aforementioned album, and fans will definitely see Nirvana or vibes of New Zealand’s own Elemeno P mixed in there.
“Most of our songs start off as a riff. A song that I personally love is ‘Mr Feel Good’, it’s also got a great story behind it.
“The night before we had studio time booked, I still hadn’t even figured out a melody besides the chorus. In the short 15-minute drive to the studio, we had to figure out the song.
“Originally, I wanted to write the song about something else that was quite rude, but I ended up landing on the idea of writing it about a person who bottles everything up for self-preservation, and then as the song progresses, they eventually crack.
“So in the 15-minute drive, we wrote all the lyrics for that song, and in the studio, we thought it’d be cool to put in something funny before the breakdown, and landed on ‘Don’t Let Them See You Cry [boys]’ and got Branden to say it in a voice,” says Parker.
In September, the band crowdfunded their album <Italics> Don’t let them see you cry. At the time, they needed to make just under $5000 and sell 150 vinyls for it to be a success.
Parker says the crowdfunding has sold out, but unfortunately, they probably will not be re-issuing the vinyl.
Hell of A Time was released on October 17 as part of their new album Don’t Let Them See You Cry.
