Two people have died following a serious two-vehicle crash near the intersection of State Highway 1 and Horahora Road at Piarere, north-west of Tirau, this evening.
Another person has sustained critical injuries, while two others have been seriously injured.
The crash was reported to police at about 7.40pm, a statement says.
Emergency services remain at the scene, and the Serious Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances of the crash.
Significant diversions are in place, including at the intersections with State Highway 29 and State Highway 27, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
