A Franklin photographer is a finalist in the country’s largest photography competition.
Ethan Lowry, who works for Clevedon design agency Beyond Usual, took a photo of broccolini fields on the outskirts of Pukekohe and entered it into New Zealand Geographic’s Photographer of the Year 2025 competition.
The sweeping aerial shot captures broccolini in all its growing phases, from freshly razed, ready to harvest, to its final stage of flowering.
Lowry said it’s been a dream of his to be featured in NZ Geographic.
“It is an honour to photograph the people, places and stories that make Franklin so special.”
Franklin economic broker Christina Rogstad said it was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the abundance of local growers.
“It’s also worth celebrating the fact that we have such a talented member of our team doing such world-class photography,” she said.
Voting is open to the public and closes on October 23. You can choose up to five of your favourite photos in the Ockham Residential People’s Choice award, including Franklin’s very own broccolini fields.
Broccolini grows year-round in Franklin due to its unique microclimate. According to a Deloitte report from 2018, vegetable (and fruit) production from the Pukekohe hub is a critical supplier to domestic retail and food service. The area only makes up around 4 per cent of the country’s total horticultural land, but the report estimated that it generated 26 per cent of New Zealand’s total domestic value of vegetable production.
