Motorists are being urged to take extra care after strong winds caused a crash in Pukeatua, Waipā, late this morning.
Police were called to Arapuni Road about 11.40 am, after a strong gust reportedly blew a vehicle off the road and into a power pole.
“Fortunately, no one was injured, and the road remains open,” a police spokesperson said.
“Police are reminding drivers to take care and drive to the conditions, and say where possible, people should delay travel until conditions improve.”
It comes as damaging gales and significant heavy rain are affecting southern and central New Zealand.
MetService told the Franklin Times that winds in the south Auckland region are likely to increase today.
“Thursday evening is when things ramp up, with periods of heavy rain and strong gusty winds overnight into Friday,” a MetService spokesperson said.
“We don’t have any severe weather on the outlook for Auckland as the rain doesn’t look to linger too long.”
