The Green Party has announced Carl Morgan as its Port Waikato candidate in this year’s general election.
Morgan is the regional advocacy team manager for Forest & Bird and the co-founder of Tamaki Makaurau Community Climate Action Network. He has several volunteer commitments with Sunset Beach Surf Life Saving Club, as a board member, lifeguard, SAR leader, and surf rowing coach.
“I’ve lived in the Port Waikato electorate for the majority of my life, spending my early years in Port Waikato itself, before moving into Pukekohe for schooling. After time in Christchurch for university and over in the UK for work, plus a brief stint in Hamilton, I have returned to Port Waikato, where I am based now.”
Morgan told the Franklin Times this was his first time standing as a candidate in a general election but was elected to the Tuakau Community Board in 2023 following a by-election. He did not stand for re-election last year.
“I’m absolutely stoked to share that I am standing for the Green Party of Aotearoa as both a list and the Port Waikato Electorate candidate. Port Waikato is where I was raised, where I found an invaluable connection to nature, and the place that taught me the beauty that comes from community.”
Morgan sits at number 28 on the Green Party list.
“We all deserve a future where everyone has what they need, not just to survive, but to thrive. Where the health of our people and the planet is put ahead of short-term profit. And where our children can swim in clean rivers, listen to the songs of our native manu, and trek through ngahere overflowing with life.
“Aotearoa has everything we need to make that happen – but we need political decisions to bring that vision to reality.
“No more industry lobbyists making decisions on what’s best for everyday Kiwis and our beautiful backyard.”
Sitting Port Waikato MP Andrew Bayly earlier announced that he would not be standing for the electorate, due to an upcoming move to the South Island, but would seek to be a National list MP. The general election will be held on November 7
