Firefighters are still battling a large and fast-moving blaze in Tongariro Forest Park that has now burned through about 1600 hectares.
The blaze was first reported about 3.15 pm on Saturday, prompting a multi-agency response and the closure of State Highway 47 between National Park Village and Tokaanu.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand says five fixed-wing aircraft and 11 helicopters are waterbombing the fire, with most already in action and others still on the way. Another helicopter is directing the air attack.
“The fire is currently 1600 hectares and as yet not controlled,” FENZ says.
Four ground crews are working around the edges of the fire while additional teams support the aircraft operations. FENZ says air operations remain the priority for safety reasons and because of their effectiveness in the steep terrain and across such a large fire front.
Precautionary evacuations of the Hillary Outdoors Education Centre, Maungatepopo School Camp, the Old Mill, Taurewa Lodge and the Avondale College Lodge are almost complete.
A total of 44 people – 43 hikers and one Department of Conservation warden, were airlifted from the Tongariro Crossing and Maungatepopo Hut.

FENZ told the Franklin Times there are a large number of brigades involved, including those from National Park, Waimarino, Owhango, Ohakune, Tūrangi, Southern Lakes, Waiouru, Ruapehu, Whanganui, Palmerston North, Ngāmotu, Manaia and Kohi.
No injuries have been reported.
Specialist fire investigators from Fire and Emergency and Police are working to establish the cause of the blaze.
FENZ says it is working closely with Police, iwi, the Department of Conservation, and local council civil defence staff to ensure the community remains safe. Residents are being urged to stay alert for updates through media and official channels.
“Anyone affected by smoke should keep doors and windows closed. Those who feel unsafe or are vulnerable to smoke are encouraged to self-evacuate and stay with family or friends,” a FENZ spokesperson says.
Police say State Highway 47 between Waimarino and Tongariro remains closed between the intersections with SH48 and SH46, with no detours available.
