Emergency services were called to Karioitahi Beach on Sunday evening after reports of a group of people in difficulty in the water.
Police told the Franklin Times they were alerted shortly after 7.30pm and responded alongside local surf lifeguards, St John Ambulance, and the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Auckland Westpac Rescue say its crew arrived to find all three people already out of the water.
“A helicopter was on standby but was not required for hospital transport, and the crew returned to base soon after.”
Three people received medical treatment at the scene. St John says one ambulance attended but no one required hospitalisation.
Police say no further action was required.
