Waikato district’s world-class Zealong Tea Estate has been recognised as one of the best tea houses on the planet, further cementing the region’s growing reputation as a standout visitor destination.
Zealong has been named in the prestigious global publication 150 Tea Houses You Need to Visit Before You Die by Lannoo Publishing.
The book showcases the world’s most remarkable tea houses and “takes tea enthusiasts and travel lovers on a fascinating journey to 150 unique tea houses across all continents.”
The announcement was made earlier this month by newly elected Waikato District Mayor Aksel Bech at a Waikato Employers and Manufacturers Association event held at Zealong Tea Estate, with more than 100 business leaders in attendance.

Mayor Bech said the recognition reinforces the district’s rising profile as a place where world-class enterprise and tourism experiences thrive.
“Zealong exemplifies what makes the Waikato district special,” he said. “From humble beginnings to becoming a global brand, their story shows the strength of local enterprise and community spirit. It is proof that the best of the best in business can grow and thrive here.”
The publication features a three-page spread highlighting Zealong’s journey as New Zealand’s only commercial tea plantation and its evolution into an international tourism destination that has hosted royalty and celebrities.
Zealong chief executive Gigi Crawford said the team was honoured by the global recognition.

“We have always believed in our story and are honoured to have it shared in these pages,” Crawford said. “It’s surreal to think that our tea, grown right here in the Mighty Waikato, is now enjoyed and stocked on shelves across the globe.
“To receive this kind of international recognition is a huge honour and a testament to the unwavering passion and commitment of everyone at Zealong.”
Hamilton Waikato Tourism chief executive Nicola Greenwell said the estate’s success reflects the region’s wider growth and appeal.
“The dedicated team at Zealong consistently strives for and delivers perfection in every interaction with manuhiri, ensuring that every guest enjoys a fantastic and memorable experience,” she said.
“Tourism plays a vital role in the Waikato and every visitor brings spending that sustains local businesses and creates new job opportunities for our communities,” Greenwell said.
Waikato district’s nutrient-rich soil and temperate climate provide ideal growing conditions for tea, contributing to Zealong’s distinctive flavour profile.
The estate produces around 20 tonnes of tea each year.
