Two separate truck crashes have caused major disruption in Maramarua today, including one that has left a person dead.
Police have confirmed one person died following a two-truck collision on State Highway 2 near Maramarua late this morning. Emergency services were called to the crash at 11.42am.
One other person was treated for minor injuries.
State Highway 2 remains closed between Monument Road and Heaven Road, with diversions in place. The Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene and enquiries into the circumstances are underway.
Fire and Emergency shift manager Ryan Geen said crews responded from across Auckland and Waikato, including Maramarua, Mangatangi, Ngatea, Te Kauwhata and Papatoetoe. Four fire trucks and a heavy rescue unit from Manukau attended.
Geen said there was a large fuel spill from one of the trucks.
A spokesperson for the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter said crew responded but were not required for hospital transport.
Earlier, St John said one patient had been treated at the scene.
Meanwhile, a second crash occurred in Maramarua at about 1.50pm.
Police said they were alerted to a truck stuck in a ditch on Findlay Road around 4pm.
There are no reported injuries but the road appears to be blocked with contractors alerted to remove the truck, police say.
FENZ confirmed crews were called to Findlay Road after an empty transporter tanker crashed into a ditch.
“Three fire trucks and a heavy rescue truck attended but two were stood down,” Geen said. Crews from Maramarua and Mangatangi remained at the scene.
There were no injuries in the second crash.
