Franklin will have a by-election battle on its hands this May and June, with one candidate already announced.
Auckland Council says nominations are open for the Wairoa subdivision of the Franklin Local Board following the resignation of founding board member Malcolm Bell.
There is consequently one seat to be filled in the Wairoa subdivision, and nominations are open until midday on Tuesday, March 31.
Dene Green has confirmed to the Franklin Times that he will stand in the by-election, following his unsuccessful Wairoa subdivision candidacy last year.
“I understand that Malcolm Bell has officially retired today [March 3]. With that in mind, I want to confirm that I will be putting myself forward as a candidate for Wairoa. As noted earlier, I will not be standing under ACT Local, but will be affiliated with One Auckland.”
Green was born in Auckland and is of Ngāti Hine and Pākehā descent. He has lived with his family in Maraetai for the past 26 years.

Meanwhile, Team Franklin is taking applications for its candidate until March 11, in order to hold interviews next weekend. Malcolm Bell campaigned under the Team Franklin ticket.
The council says that in order to be nominated, candidates must be New Zealand citizens, 18 years of age or over and on the Parliamentary electoral roll.
“Their nomination form needs to have signatures from two electors enrolled in the Wairoa subdivision area.
“A deposit of $200 needs to be paid when submitting the nomination. This is refunded if the candidate polls greater than 25 per cent of the successful candidate.”
Candidates can find further information on how to submit their nomination on voteauckland.co.nz.
Nomination forms must be received no later than midday Tuesday, March 31, by the Electoral Officer at Level 2, 198 Federal Street, Auckland or at select libraries.
The list of candidates will be announced as soon as practicable after the close of nominations online at VoteAuckland.
Candidate profiles will be available closer to voting opening so electors can learn more about candidates and their policies.
Voting opens on Monday, May 11, and close at midday on Wednesday, June 10.
