A new commercial vehicle safety centre will soon open in Bombay.
The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) says commercial vehicle safety centres are sites where police officers can do thorough inspections of heavy vehicles, checking things such as vehicle weight, road user charges, and driver impairment.
“The benefits for you are less road maintenance by our reducing overweight loads on the road, along with us identifying and targeting non-compliant operators. This’ll ensure everyone is operating safely, paying for their fair share of maintenance, and keep a level playing field for the freight industry.
“To build this centre, we installed scales in the road to weigh vehicles as they drive – ‘weigh-in-motion’ scales – cameras, and electronic signage north and south of Bombay Interchange.”
NZTA says the technology screens passing heavy vehicles, and any non-compliant vehicles (such as vehicles that are overweight) can be directed into the centre for police to inspect.
Before the centre can open, NZTA will set up the digital and operational components before making the centre fully active. Alongside the centre at Bombay, NZTA is upgrading existing centres and building new ones on high-volume freight routes across the country.
