Consultation regarding a memorial at Pukekohe Cemetery is now open until May 12 with a hui now scheduled for May 10.
Extended due to Cyclone Vaianu, feedback is sought about plans for a memorial for approximately 200 unmarked graves at Pukekohe Cemetery, many of them for Māori babies.
In specific, opinions are requested about which parts of the design are meaningful and inclusive and whether it creates the space for reflection so many have asked for.
A working group sought the views of whanau throughout the process, Franklin Local Board chair Alan Cole says.
“The most often repeated themes were inclusivity and creating a space for all where quiet reflection could take place. It’s really important that we can acknowledge those buried there in a way that maintains their dignity.”
A design concept has been approved by the Pukekohe Cemetery Committee. It features a garden, entranceway, paths, widespread planting and a memorial wall. It acknowledges unmarked graves while respecting existing burial areas.
The postponed whanau hui is now set for May 10 at Ngā Hau E Whaa Marae o Pukekohe on Beatty Road. For more information, or to provide feedback, visit pukekohecemeterymemorial@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz.
