One lucky local is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime, thanks to the Franklin Says Thanks initiative.
“We’re looking to send someone – a boy or girl aged 16–18 – who is going to benefit the most from a 10-day voyage on the Spirit of Adventure,” the initiative’s founder Geoff Dickey says. “This is a fantastic opportunity.”
Established in 2013, Franklin Says Thanks is backed by local businesses. It has funded 12 teens to date, keen to help them become all they can be.
“There are no phones, no laptops – the trip is purely about bringing out the best in young people. They learn more about themselves and become more confident,” Dickey says. “The only thing we require is that the successful applicant embraces the opportunity and will be happy to report back and say thanks to the local businesses involved in making this happen for them.”
The Spirit of Adventure Trust was established in 1972, launching the Spirit of Adventure schooner to help youth develop skills, knowledge, experience and camaraderie. The trust now sails the Spirit of New Zealand.
