I’ve always believed that Aucklanders deserve a council that treats every ratepayer dollar
with real care. That’s why I’m pleased with where we’ve landed so far this financial year.
We’ve achieved $77.6 million in savings, putting us at 90 per cent of our annual target. And
that target isn’t small – it rose from $66 million last year to $86 million this year, and it
increases again to $106 million next year. We’re pushing ourselves because it’s the right thing to do.
What I’m most proud of is that $50 million of these savings are enduring. These aren’t quick fixes or temporary patches – they’re long–term improvements in how we operate. The
remaining $27 million comes from one–off initiatives and tighter spending controls, which
also play an important role, especially in tough financial times.
As chair of the Value for Money Committee, I’m fortunate to work with councillors who take
the responsibility of careful financial stewardship seriously, including Bo Burns, Councillor
for Howick. Having colleagues who approach the work with focus and practicality genuinely
supports the progress we’re making.
When I’m out talking with Aucklanders, I hear the same message again and again – people
want us to be careful with their money and upfront about how we’re spending it. They want
to know we’re making every dollar stretch as far as it can. That’s exactly what we’re focused on. And importantly, these savings aren’t about cutting services. They’re about delivering them smarter – practical, sensible changes that reduce costs without taking away the things people rely on.
In the third quarter alone, we delivered another $9.7 million through higher non–rates revenue and operational efficiencies. That’s the momentum we need as we work toward the final $8 million.
The environment isn’t easy. Households and businesses across Auckland are feeling the
pressure of rising costs, and the council is no different. But that only makes discipline more
important.
We’re committed to operating efficiently, responsibly, and with Aucklander’s front of mind.
Strong financial management isn’t a slogan – it’s a responsibility – and I’m determined we
keep delivering on it.
