Poor decisions resulted in a teenager’s arrest, a badly damaged vehicle and a damaged house, but it could have been so much worse.
“[The vehicle] travelled through a fence and a ranch slider door into a newly built and unoccupied townhouse,” explains Senior Sergeant Peter Kaveney, Counties Manukau Police.
“It’s fortunate we have not had to notify this young man’s parents that he had been seriously injured in a crash and that no one else got caught up in this event.”
The incident began when police patrolling in Highland Park observed a Toyota sportscar enter Pakuranga Road (east Auckland) from a service station just after midnight.
“The vehicle performed a loss of traction in front of the unit and sped off. Police attempted to signal the vehicle stop but it fled at speed up Angelo Avenue,” Kaveney says.
Due to the manner in which the vehicle was driving, and at speed, it was not pursued. Checks identified that the registration plates did not match.
Police then located the vehicle after it crashed into the house in Howick.
The 17-year-old male driver was arrested and enforcement action is to be confirmed.
“Speed increases the risk of harm to other motorists and members of the community,” Kaveney adds. “The simple message is that when Police signal you to stop, stop!”
