New Zealand Police are investigating a homicide after a man died following an incident that unfolded near the Hamilton yacht club last night.
Emergency services were called to Lake Crescent at about 6.15pm after reports that two people had been injured. One victim later died at the scene, while the other was taken to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.
Detective Inspector Daryl Smith, Waikato District Manager Criminal Investigations, said scene examinations are underway at two locations, including the toilet block at the yacht club.
“We have officers working at the Lake Crescent address, and also at a second location of interest several hundred metres away, the toilet block at the yacht club,” Smith said.
Police believe those involved travelled on foot between the two scene locations and are urging anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area to come forward.
“We believe those involved have travelled on foot between our two scene locations, so we would encourage anyone who may have information that could help Police, who has not already spoken with us, to contact us,” Smith said.
He acknowledged the impact of the incident on the local community.
“We know this will be an unsettling time for people in our community that such violence has occurred in a public place. I can reassure people we are working hard to hold those responsible to account.”
Anyone with information is asked to report it online at 105.police.govt.nz by clicking “Update Report”, or by calling 105, using reference number 251218/5897. Anonymous reports can also be made through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
