The New Zealand Defence Force has disposed of “an item of concern” on Browns Island today.
Aucklanders on social media were commenting earlier on June 15 of hearing an explosion and seeing smoke rising on the Hauraki Gulf island that can been seen from eastern coastal suburbs such as Eastern Beach.
The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has told the Times: “A New Zealand Defence Force explosive ordnance disposal team responded to a request for assistance from New Zealand Police on Browns Island today where an item of concern was discovered.
“The item was investigated and determined to be a marine marker, which was disposed of in a safe manner.
“Anyone who discovers a potentially dangerous item should always exercise caution until the item is deemed safe by an expert,” says the NZDF.
“If you do discover something that might be dangerous, remain clear of the item and contact police as soon as possible.”
The Times had earlier contacted the police in relation to the incident, who directed us to the NZDF.
