For Keely Muir from Waiuku’s Stable Light Gallery, art has always involved providing a space for others to share their work.
Coming soon, The Onion Field: Pinhole Photography Exhibition by Leonie Richardson and David Collier is expected to ‘enlighten’ art lovers. The work will explore the theme of movement through the evolution of photography, Muir explains:
“Referencing both historical techniques and art movements, their images connect past and present, with Franklin’s onion fields serving as a quiet, local echo of this legacy,” she says. “Through this lens, The Onion Field becomes not just a title, but a reflection on how a single image can spark creative transformation.”
Part of the acclaimed Auckland Festival of Photography, The Onion Field runs May 29 to June 30.
Since opening the gallery in October, Muir has already exhibited work by such artists as Isaac Khasawneh, David Collier, Lisa Kearns and Carole Garside as well as some of her own photography.
In addition to displaying creations, the gallery is a hive of creativity where artists share their skills across various mediums including woodturning, weaving, charcoal, painting, mixed media and pottery.
“The space is also used for community art workshops,” Muir says. “We have had beginner photography classes run by Sharon Smith, a pottery class by Bex from R Ceramics, and a pottery workshop by Sha Ganjali from the Ara Design Studio. I’m always on the lookout for artists keen to teach their craft.”
