Planned overnight closures of State Highway 22 west of the Drury Interchange will no longer be required, after road works were completed ahead of schedule.
A New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA) spokesperson says crews were able to finish the surfacing overnight, removing the need for further closures.
“Crews had an excellent night last night and were able to finish all asphalt surfacing ahead of schedule,” the spokesperson says.
“A closure is no longer required tonight.”
The full overnight closures had been scheduled for Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 January, between the Drury Interchange northbound on and off-ramps and the SH22/Karaka Road/Great South Road intersection to the west, as part of the SH1 Papakura to Drury project.
The closures were required to allow new asphalt surfacing to be laid ahead of shifting SH22 traffic into a new alignment. With that work now completed, SH22 will remain open overnight.
Lane changes and ongoing works
Following the completion of the surfacing work, westbound lanes on SH22 will be realigned to the southern side of the road to allow construction of a right-turn bay into Victoria Street.
Right turns out of Victoria Street onto SH22 will remain prohibited until the intersection is fully signalised, which NZTA expects to occur in late March.
Pavement construction and utility works will continue on the southern side of SH22 for the next month.
NZTA says the lane realignment is a key step toward signalising the SH22/Victoria Street/Mercer Street intersection, including further underground services, stormwater infrastructure and pavement works.
The new right-turn bay into Victoria Street will also enable the planned demolition of the Bremner Road bridge over SH1, scheduled to take place overnight on 14 February.
