A 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder following the death of a man near the Hamilton yacht club last week.
Police say the charge relates to the death of Jason Poa, also known as Jason Tipene, who died after an incident at a Lake Crescent address on Thursday, December 18.
Detective Inspector Daryl Smith, Waikato District Manager Criminal Investigations, says the man was arrested today at an address in Chartwell.
He is due to appear in the Hamilton District Court on Friday, December 26.
Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the death.
Emergency services were called to Lake Crescent at about 6.15pm on December 18 after reports that two people had been injured. One man later died at the scene, while the other was taken to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.
Smith says the investigation has involved scene examinations at two nearby locations, including the toilet block at the Hamilton yacht club, several hundred metres from the Lake Crescent address.
“We have officers working at the Lake Crescent address, and also at a second location of interest several hundred metres away, the toilet block at the yacht club,” Smith said last week.
Police believe those involved travelled on foot between the two locations and have previously appealed for anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area to come forward.
Smith acknowledged the incident has been unsettling for the local community and said police have been working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death.
