Retirement has rocked Chiefs Manawa preparations for the upcoming Super Rugby Aupiki competition as the squad assembles for pre-season training this week.
Black Fern Awhina Tangen-Wainohu has confirmed her decision to retire. Her talent, experience and work ethic will be missed, Manawa head coach, Dwayne Sweeney says. However, she will continue to support the squad in a mentoring role.
“While it’s really tough that Awhi won’t be able to take the field this season, the value she brings to Chiefs Manawa is still huge. Her experience, standards and presence in our environment will be invaluable for the group and we are really pleased she’ll remain with us throughout the 2026 season to help guide and support our players”
Additional changes have forced Sweeney’s hand due to injuries. Among them is rising star fullback Kaea Nepia, niece of Chiefs legend Liam Messam, who is unlikely to appear at all this season.
Thankfully, strong additions to the roster include Taranaki-born outside back Louise Blyde, Madison Flutey and Jessie Wharekura. Flutey has returned to New Zealand after a stint with the Exeter Chiefs and BOP Volcanix local, Wharekura, has shown good form during the Farah Palmer Cup.
As reported previously in the Times, the Chiefs Manawa will rely on players from six provincial unions including Counties Manukau Heat stars Shoshanah Seumanutafa and Levonah Motuliki.
The team kicks off its Super Rugby Aupiki campaign against Matatū on June 13 at One NZ Stadium, Christchurch.
