A motorcyclist who allegedly fled Police early this morning in Papatoetoe has had his bike impounded and a number of illicit drug items seized.
The incident began about 1.38am on Great South Road, when officers spotted a Harley-Davidson carrying two people.
The Harley Davidson wasn’t pursued, but the Police Eagle helicopter deployed overhead and tracked its movements.
Counties Manukau West Area Response Manager Senior Sergeant Steve Albrey says officers activated lights and sirens due to the rider’s driving behaviour.
“The rider failed to stop and sped away from the unit at high speed and was seen running a red light,” he says.
The Eagle helicopter tracked the motorbike from the air before it was seen entering a Papatoetoe property and the rider attempted to hide in a garage.
Ground units attended the address and located both the rider and his passenger.
Police say further items were located at the rider’s property, including a bag of cannabis, a cannabis plant and methamphetamine utensils.
The rider allegedly returned a breath alcohol reading of 441 micrograms, nearly twice the legal limit.
The 48-year-old man will be summonsed to court for drink driving, while enquiries into the drug offences are continuing.
“Operating any vehicle or motorcycle while under the influence of alcohol is extremely risky,” Albrey says.
“It’s fortunate that the rider, his passenger or anyone else in the community wasn’t injured as a result of his actions last night.”
The passenger, a 34-year-old woman, was also arrested on an unrelated warrant.
