Although Australian folk-pop group The Seekers have laid down their instruments, the carnival is not over. Their music lives on thanks to acclaimed tribute band Morningtown Ride, set to bring their classic tunes to Clevedon.
On May 10 (Mother’s Day) the band will be playing at All Souls Anglican Church as part of the Sanctuary St James programme concert series.
Band member Lisa Lorrell believes The Seekers have never gone out of style.
“I think there’s definitely a real affection for The Seekers’ music, which is really magical. People really enjoyed listening to them, particularly those beautiful harmonies that set them apart from other groups.”
Another band member, John Chapman, is married to the vicar of All Souls Anglican Church, the Reverend Sarah Park. The band also includes Remco Numan and Chris Mears.
Last year, all four starred in the Georgy Girl musical, a production about the life of Judith Durham, The Seekers’ singer/songwriter.
“We had a really lovely connection, not just as musicians but as friends,” says Lorrell. “We got together a couple of times and decided, why not give it a go? So, we formed Morningtown Ride and it went from there.”
Named after one of The Seekers’ most famous songs, the band tested out their set on friends and family, Lorrell adds.
“It was a roaring success! Since then, our aim is simple – to celebrate the joy, warmth and enduring beauty of The Seekers’ music and to share it with people, some of whom know every word to every song.”
