The Barbarians are at the gates of Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Among the international horde set to assail the Springboks on their home turf this weekend is Karaka-raised, Harry Plummer.
Having made coach Scott Razor Robertson’s cut for the fixture, Plummer will start off the bench in Port Elizabeth.
Now plying his trade for Clermont in France’s Top 14, the former Blues and Auckland flyhalf is an adept kicker who has been making every post a winner in Europe since heading offshore last year.
Despite having just one All Black cap to his name, Plummer has shown that he’s comfortable competing at the game’s top level.
However, he isn’t the only New Zealander in the squad – 89 test cap All Black TJ Perenara will captain the Barbarians with former Chiefs Alex Nankivell and Lachlan Boshier rounding out the Kiwi on-field quartet for the match.
Robertson confirms his squad will adhere to the usual full throttle attacking style for with the Barbarians are famous.
“We have embraced the Barbarians spirit and tradition, coming together as a group and enjoying each other’s company,” he says. “It’s a team packed with talent, guys who have come from all over the world and have a great chance to showcase their ability.
“We are all really excited – to play against the world champions in South Africa is an awesome opportunity.”
The game kicks off at 1am this Sunday, June 21 (NZ time) screening on Sky Sport.
