Wholesale and retail bakers, you have until 5pm on June 24 to enter this year’s Bakels NZ Supreme Pie Awards.
So while a large number of bakeries and cafes have already entered and are working on their recipes, there is still time to enter. It’s free and easy – just go online to www.pieawards.nz.
People can enter the Café Boutique category if they use store-bought pastry, or if they make their own pastry there’s nine categories to enter including mince and cheese, steak and cheese, potato top, gourmet meat and vegetarian.
Wholesale bakeries producing 60,000 or more pies in a seven-day period are eligible for the commercial/wholesale category where their best ever mince and cheese pie will set them apart during judging.
The Pie Awards not only gives people a chance to have their pies independently blind-judged against their peers, it also gives them a chance to promote their business by posting that they’ve entered on social media, on their store window and in-store, and through local media.
And they have a chance to win prize money. Each gold award pie winner receives $1000 and the Supreme winner receives $7500 on top of their gold award prize money.
Ask any past gold or supreme winner and they’ll say winning will boost a business for years to come as it becomes a destination bakery not only for local pie fans but for dedicated pie connoisseurs around New Zealand and international tourists.
NZ Bakels managing director Brent Kersel says: “This is our 28th year of the Pie Awards, and it’s become one of the biggest food competitions in New Zealand with hundreds of entries and thousands of pies being judged.
“The competition set out to improve the quality of our pies, but it has gone far beyond that now and it’s made heroes of our winning bakers who rightfully deserve that credit.
“In 2026 will you be one of our winners? What have you got to lose? Go on, get your entry in.”
